A sex crime conviction can be damaging to a person’s reputation. Not only does the accused person face prison time and probation, but he or she may also have to go on a sex offender registry. This can affect a person’s future employment as well as housing and schooling choices. A New Jersey man was recently sentenced to prison for distributing child pornography, and he must now register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law.

The 25-year-old Audubon man, who lived above a day care facility, pleaded guilty to distribution of child porn. He admitted to using Peer to Peer file sharing software to duplicate files depicting pornographic images of minors. These files were then stored on a shared folder on his computer’s hard drive so others could easily access them.

Besides sex offender registry, the man must serve three years in prison. He cannot be released on bail because he was in the United States illegally. He was one of 27 people — 26 men and one woman — arrested as part of New Jersey’s “Operation Watchdog” investigation, which targeted those who engaged in possessing and distributing online child porn.

Even though the man did not sexually assault a child, he had explicit images of children in his possession and used these images to his advantage. He will now be considered a sex offender for the rest of his life. A Megan’s Law appeal might help remove some of the restrictions the man will now face. An experienced criminal defense attorney can provide more information regarding such an appeal.
