What Is Sexual Assault?

Sexual Assault Is a Serious Crime
There are many possible consequences of a conviction for sexual assault in New Jersey:
- Prison time— An individual convicted of sexual assault faces up to 10 years in prison. Aggravated assault carries the potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison.
- Megan’s Law— Individuals who are convicted of sexual assault face mandatory lifetime registration as a sex offender, per Megan’s Law.
- Parole Supervision For Life (PSL)— Also known as Community Supervision For Life (CSL), this is potentially highly restricting consequence of a sexual assault conviction. When an individual is under PSL, a parole officer may be able to enter the individual’s home for check-ins, and the individual may need permission before leaving the state or the country for personal reasons.
